Lussari is not a viewpoint with a bar attached: it is a real village, tiny, of stone houses leaning on one another around a shrine, on a mountain top at 1,790 metres. Fifteen minutes in the cable car from Camporosso takes you there, and you feel the difference between valley floor and summit on your skin: in August it is thirty degrees below and fifteen with a wind up here.
What strikes people who arrive without knowing is that prayer here happens in three languages. The shrine has drawn Italian, Austrian and Slovenian pilgrims for centuries, and the plaques, the hymns and the notes people leave sit side by side without anyone ever having arranged it. It is the one place in this area where the border, instead of dividing, brought people together.
If you come in August, look at Friday: there is an evening run after five o’clock, it costs twelve euros instead of eighteen, and sunset from up there is another thing entirely compared with midday. Bring a jacket anyway: as the sun goes down, at eighteen hundred metres, it is cold even in mid-August.
From the top you see the Julian Alps on one side and the Val Canale on the other. On clear days, the sort you get in late September after a storm, the view runs a very long way.

How much does the Monte Lussari cable car cost?
A return ticket is 18 euros for adults, 9 for young people born between 2007 and 2018, and free for children born from 2019 onwards. A single ride costs 13.50 euros. On Fridays in August there is an evening run at 12 euros after 5pm.
Can you walk up to Monte Lussari?
Yes, the pilgrims’ path climbs from Camporosso. It is a demanding ascent of several hours with a serious height gain: take proper footwear, water and a checked weather forecast.
Can you take a dog on the Lussari cable car?
Yes. For medium and large dogs there is a supplement of 3 euros a day.
