Passo Pramollo
On the Austrian border, the lifts stay open in summer and carry you to an alpine lake with a beach and pedalos. It is the right day out when the children have had enough of footpaths.

Passo Pramollo — Nassfeld in German — sits on the Austrian border above Pontebba. It is known in winter as a ski area, but the reason we put it in this guide is summer.
Here, unlike almost everywhere else nearby, the lifts keep running in summer. And high up there is an alpine lake with an adventure park: beach, water games, slides. The entrance ticket covers the rides, a parasol and a sun lounger for the whole day, and half an hour of pedalo.
Fill up before you drive up: petrol costs less in Austria than in Italy, and you are already there. It is the kind of detail no guide writes and everyone who lives here does.
It is the place you need on the third or fourth day of a holiday, when the children have walked enough and want an afternoon for themselves. Around it there are still twenty-six themed trails and hundreds of kilometres of walking and mountain biking routes for anyone who refuses to give in.
You cross a border: bring valid identification. And remember that Austrian motorways require a vignette — if you stay on ordinary roads, you do not need one.
