The Alpe Adria Trail: the three-nation loop
A long-distance trail that passes through Tarvisio and crosses Italy, Austria and Slovenia. Eight days for the whole thing, four for the short version.

This is not a day out: it is a long-distance trail, the kind you walk with a rucksack and sleep along the way. And it passes through Tarvisio, which means you can start by walking out of the door.
The three-nation loop crosses Friuli, Carinthia and Slovenia in eight days, or in four in the short version. From Tarvisio the first part drops to Tarvisio Centrale on the Monte Borgo walk, takes the Alpe Adria cycle path and the Slizza Gorge trail, then returns to the cycle path as far as Aclete and arrives at Fusine. The next stage climbs from the lakes to the Zacchi hut.
If you do not have eight days, do the first stage and nothing more: from Tarvisio to the Fusine lakes by the gorge and the cycle path. You walk a piece of a genuine long-distance trail, you sleep in your own bed, and you find out whether one day you will want to do all of it.
It is the route that explains better than any other where you are: in three days you sleep in three different countries without ever taking a vehicle.
Stages need booking well ahead, because beds high up are few. The route crosses two borders: carry valid identification.
