You can reach the shrine on Monte Lussari by cable car in a quarter of an hour. But for five hundred years people went up on foot, and the path is still there: eight kilometres and three hundred metres, nine hundred and seventy metres of climb, about three hours up from the plain at Camporosso.
It crosses the ancient forest and arrives at the stone village on the summit, where people pray in three languages. Those who walk it say the place is a different thing when you arrive on foot. It is probably true. But it is not a stroll.
If you want to try it without risking the whole day: walk up and ride down. Buy a single descent, spare your knees nine hundred and seventy metres of downhill, and if halfway up you realise it is not your day you can turn back having wasted nothing.
⚠️ This route is not suitable for beginners or for young children. You need good fitness, sure footing, boots, water and a checked weather forecast. Nine hundred and seventy metres of climb is a lot, and mountain weather changes fast.
