There is a place in Tarvisio that changes its job twice a year. From April to November the Priesnig plateau is an eighteen-hole golf course, par 70, at seven hundred and fifty-four metres. Then the snow arrives, and over the same meadows the cross-country tracks are laid.
It is not a winter afterthought: it is the Arena Paruzzi, FISI-homologated, meaning it is a genuine competition course, and it carries the name of Gabriella Paruzzi, Olympic cross-country champion, who comes from this area. There are seven and a half kilometres in all: five demanding in the technical section and two and a half easy, for anyone trying cross-country for the first time. And there is snowmaking, which in a mean winter is the difference between skiing and watching.
This is the view from our window: our house is on via Priesnig, the same street as the club, at number 76. In summer our guests look out over green lawns and a beautifully kept course; in winter, over the same meadows, the cross-country skiers go by. It is not something you can invent on a website: it is where our house is.
The golf course opened in the 1990s with nine holes, grew to eighteen, and in 2013 the architect Marco Croze rebuilt it along with the club house. Hole fourteen is a 480-metre par 5 with a right-hand dog-leg that is the signature of the course.
The plateau is closed in between Monte Priesnig and Monte Florianca, and it faces the sun: that is why the snow holds in winter and the grass is what it is in summer.
The golf course is open from 1 April to 30 November, snow permitting, and has a restaurant whose chef works a great deal with fresh fish. Green fees and track charges change every season: ask the club before you go.
