Every hut in this guide stands in the Julian Alps, south of the valley. Not this one: it is in the Carnic Alps, on the opposite side, and the difference shows. The Julians are vertical and pale rock; here the slopes are gentler, the pastures wider, and you look towards Austria rather than Slovenia.
You drive up from Ugovizza on a surfaced road to the car park, at the meeting of the Pleccia and Uque streams, and from there it is thirty to forty-five minutes on foot on the CAI 507 path. The hut stands at one thousand four hundred and twelve metres, in the upper Val Uque.
This is the hut to keep for the day the weather looks uncertain over the Julians: the two ranges often have different weather, and it happens that it is clear here while it rains on the other side. Worth a phone call before writing off a day.
Anyone wanting to go on has about three hundred metres in an hour towards Monte Osternig, and the full loop from Ugovizza is twelve kilometres with no technical difficulty.
In winter the road to the car park may not be passable and the route becomes a snowshoe walk: you need snowshoes, poles and the avalanche report.
