This is the classic snowshoe route of the Tarvisio area. You set off from the Florit chapel, in the Saisera valley, and climb through the woods for five hundred metres of ascent: ten kilometres in all, medium difficulty.

Halfway there is the Grego hut, where you stop. Anyone with legs left goes on towards Sella Somdogna and past the frozen tarn, which in winter is covered in snow and ice and is the photograph everyone takes home.

Advice from someone who lives here

The Saisera valley is a closed, shaded valley: in winter the sun arrives late and leaves early. Set off in the morning, not after lunch, or you will find yourself coming down in the dark with the cold rising.

Know before you go

You need proper snowshoes and poles, not just boots. And in winter, in the mountains, you always check the avalanche report before setting off: a wood that is quiet in summer is not automatically safe under snow.
