The Slizza Gorge circuit

Two kilometres inside a gorge, on walkways slung above the torrent and through a tunnel cut by hand in the nineteenth century. An hour, and you start from the village.

It is the closest route of all, and the one visitors discover last. Over centuries the Slizza torrent has cut a narrow gorge into the rock, and the path goes through it: wooden and steel walkways slung above the water, staircases, small bridges, tunnels in the rock.

The part nobody expects is a tunnel cut by hand in the second half of the nineteenth century, when this valley belonged to the Austro-Hungarian empire. The route was rebuilt and made safe in 2024: new walkways and solid railings.

Advice from someone who lives here

It is the only route in this guide you can do setting off on foot from the house, without taking the car. If you arrive in the evening and want an hour's walk before dinner, this is the place.

You go in from via Bamberga, at Boscoverde, near the Devil's Bridge. And the name of the street is no accident: in 1007 the emperor Henry II gave this forest to the Bishop of Bamberg, in Bavaria.

Know before you go

After days of heavy rain the walkways are slippery and the torrent swells: you need shoes with a proper tread. And an honest note: some guides recommend it from age 8 upwards, others list it as suitable for families. The route was rebuilt in 2024 and is protected, but with very small children judge for yourselves.
